Wedding Planning & Ideas

Choosing the right DJ can make your reception one for everyone to remember.

By Jeremy Jones

Choosing the right DJ can make your reception one for everyone to remember.  The DJ works closely with the bride or wedding coordinator or other designee.  The DJ keeps the reception going and keeps everyone on schedule.  While you are busy catching up with old friends and meeting new family members, the DJ is keeping track of time and preparing for the next “stage” of your reception.  Whether it is the first dance, the bouquet toss, or the grand exit, the DJ makes the proper announcements, and ensures everyone knows, especially the photographer.

Because of the relative ease of getting DJ equipment and the internet making it easier to get music, many people are calling themselves DJs.  This is fine for a parties, but not for your reception.  When choosing your DJ, there are some important questions that must be asked.  What is the wedding reception experience of the actual DJ at your reception?  What types of music will the DJ have at your reception?  Most any DJ will promise to have songs you specifically request, but what if an unexpected request comes the night of your reception, will the DJ be prepared?  What plan is in place if DJ is unable to show up?  If your DJ cannot be there because of something completely out of his control, such as a car accident or serious illness, what safeguards does the company have in place to ensure your reception will go as planned?  Many DJ companies will have back up systems.  Only the most reputable will have back up DJs. If the DJ is a one man operation, be sure you are satisfied with his plans in the event he is unable to show up, even if at the last moment.  Do not accept, “I’ve never missed a show” as an acceptable answer.  Car accidents, illness, family emergencies happen.  Though you would understand, your reception would be ruined.  If possible, check references.  Obviously, if you request references from a DJ, he is only going to give you ones that favor him.  Ask the DJ company if they have a customer satisfaction database.  Reputable companies will not only have one, they will have it audited by a third party.  Does your DJ have insurance?  This is especially important if you are having your reception on private property, such as a private home.  DJ equipment is heavy, uses a lot of electricity, and uses many wires.  Though rare, accidents do happen.  If the DJ does not have the proper insurance, you may be fully responsible for any injuries sustained by your guests.  Furthermore, most reception halls, such as hotels, state you are responsible for the behavior of your guests, and the people you hire.  If the DJ damages something, you may be ultimately responsible for the payment of such damages.  Be sure you have a copy of the insurance binder.  The coverage should be no less than one million dollars per incident.

Your reception is your day of celebration. The DJ should provide you with as many consultations as you require to be sure everything is exactly what you want.  Make it clear to your DJ if he/she can take requests.  Make it clear what type of music YOU want, and what should he do if someone request something contrary to your wishes.
